The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner Book Review

The Jane Austen Society by Natalie Jenner Book Review

Such a fantastic and unique collection of stories that were woven to create The Jane Austen Society. Natalie Jenner took inspiration from the past and developed her own characters and Austen-esque storylines. The characters overall were very enjoyable and easy to love. My favourite character was Dr. Gray. I loved his morality, candour, chivalry, and encouragement. I did not expect him to play such a central role in the story. The storyline of Miss Knight surprised me more than any other. I felt so many various emotions while reading this book. Such as love, loss, heartache, excitement, shock, anger, joy, and comradery. I admired the bravery in each of the characters. I admire Jenner for showing the various types of bravery that a human can have and demonstrate. Such an important part of the human experience to highlight. Lastly, I kept wanting to insert myself into the middle of The Jane Austen Society. I felt a part of the conversations and would declare, “I want to be a member! I love Jane Austen! I want to talk about Jane Austen, with those who love talking about her as much as I do!”

I enjoyed the little authentic nuances that added an extra layer of history to the story. I enjoyed the time in history it was set, as I enjoyed World War II fiction, but often wonder what life was like after the war. This story goes into enough historical detail to add interest to the plot. I admired the use of both the United States and the United Kingdom for locations. I am still surprised at what an influence the United States market had on Jane Austen items. I often forget she did not become more popular until later on in history. There were also significant time jumps throughout the story. I found those were essential to keeping the story flowing.

While I liked the beginning, the story did not pick up for me until the end of chapter seven. At that point, I blazed on through.

I would suggest that to keep it accurate to the British location that meters be used instead of feet when referring to measurements. This could change in the final proofs, as this story is not set to release until May 26thof 2020. If you are a fan of Jane Austen and historical fiction, I highly recommend getting yourself a copy on that date or preordering it!

I have so much more I want to say, but unfortunately, they would be spoilers, and I do not like to put spoilers in my reviews. However, there may be a letter. Yes, like THAT letter. But who am I to tell?

I am so honoured that I got an advanced reader copy to review! Thank you, St. Martin’s Press and Natalie Jenner, for this beautiful copy and story.

I did receive an advanced reader copy of this book in a giveaway. This in no way influences my review, and this review is 100% my own opinions.
