OwlCrateAThon 2020 Reading Wrap Up

OwlCrateAThon 2020 Reading Wrap Up

OwlCrateAThon is so special to me because it is the readathon that introduced me to readathons. I had so much fun during my first one, that I have participated in every OwlCrateAThon since, along with a bunch of other readathons hosted by others.

February was a bad reading month for me. I read so many low rated books. Then I was traveling which always means I get very little reading done. So, coming back having read a bunch of bad books, along with not being in my usual reading routine, put me in a reading rut.

I have been looking forward to this readathon since the mini summer one. So, the fact I could not get excited when the time came was hard on me.

I have read a mix of OwlCrate and OwlCrate Jr. books along with an old favourite.

First, I read City of Ghosts by V.E. Schwab. It was a haunting middle grade book set in Scotland. It was fun to travel to somewhere in this book, that I have wanted to go to, pretty much my whole life. I usually love darker stories, but I have been feeling like more light stories. So, I struggled a bit with that. I cannot wait to read the sequel because I love Schwab’s writing and storytelling.

Next was Crier’s War. I was not sure what to expect with this story. I honestly did not enjoy the beginning of it. The story felt long and drawn out. The book is a perfect example though of why when I am not enjoying a book, I continue on with it anyways. The last 100 pages of Crier’s War were awesome! I could not put it down. The last quarter of the book sped up significantly. It was also my book club pick, so I knocked that out at the same time.

Since I was feeling like a quick read, next, I started Cog. I read it in one sitting. It was quick and fun. I think the authour can do a lot more with that world.

The Guinevere Deception was an amazing surprise! It was the book I needed. While it was darker, and about Camelot (not usually a favourite of mine,) I was gripped by the writing on the first page. The story telling was engaging and incredible. There was not a slow moment. I read it in two sittings. I would have finished it in one but had an obligation I had to take care of.

To keep that reading high going, I decided to reread a favourite from last year. I read Crown of Feathers. It was one of my favourite books last year. Since Heart of Flames came out last month, I figured a reread to refresh myself was a great idea. I loved it even more the second time around. Heart of Flames will be read in April.

Usually I take part in the OwlCrateAThon challenges. This year with my difficulty reading, I just tried to read what I was in the mood for. What books were calling to me. It is nice to come together with a group of people who are reading the same books.
