Jane Austen July Reading Wrap Up

Jane Austen July Reading Wrap Up

I am sorry I have been so absent on this blog. I have been reading SO MUCH that I have had little time for doing much else. July was no exception. I took place in Jane Austen July hosted by Katie from Books and Things. I loved the prompts and figured I would use this reading challenge as a way to reread some favourites as well as read through many of the books on my Jane Austen shelf that I have not read yet. Not all items I read or watched are in the photos, but I have listened them below, with their respective prompts.

1)   Read one of Jane Austen’s six main novels

I read all six of Austen’s main novels. My order of how I enjoy these six books moved around a bit. The order I read them in interestingly went from least favourite to favourite. In order from least favourite to favourite: Sense and Sensibility, Mansfield Park, Persuasion, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Northanger Abbey.

2)   Read something by Jane Austen that is not one of her six main novels

I read Lady Susan, Edgar and Emma, The Watsons, and Sandition.

3)   Read a non-fiction work about Jane Austen or her time

The World of Jane Austen by Nigel Nicolson

4)   Read a retelling of a Jane Austen book

Lost in Austenland by Emma Campbell Webster
I was Jane Austen’s Best Friend by Cora Harrison
Purr-suasion by Renee Riva
Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
A Guinea Pig Pride and Prejudice by Bloomsbury
Ordinary, Extraordinary Jane Austen by Deborah Hopkinson
Austenland by Shannon Hale
Midnight in Austenland by Shannon Hale

5)   Read a book by a contemporary of Jane Austen

I read Northanger Abbey for the third time this year during Jane Austen July. I absolutely love it! I decided because of that I wanted to read The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe.

6)   Watch a direct screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book

Love and Friendship (Based on the novella Lady Susan)
Sense and Sensibility- 1981, 1995, 2008
Pride and Prejudice- 1995, 2005
Persuasion- 1995, 2007
Emma- 1996, 1996, 2009
Northanger Abbey- 1987, 2007
Mansfield Park- 1999, 2008

7)   Watch a modern screen adaptation of a Jane Austen book

Bridget Jones’s Baby
The Jane Austen Book Club
From Mansfield with Love
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Lost in Austen
Wishbone: Pup Fiction

I cannot wait until next year! I have so many more books based on Jane Austen or about Jane Austen that I cannot wait to read. I found some more to add to my to be read pile as well.
